Following boundary changes for the UK Parliament at the 2005 General Election, the area crosses the Westminster constituencies of Edinburgh South West, Edinburgh East, Edinburgh West and Edinburgh North and Leith. I work closely with MPs, Councillors and Community Councils in my work on behalf of Edinburgh Central constituents.
One of the main issues that constituents have been contacting me about lately are the impacts of the Council's budget cuts on frontline services. In our schools, the recently passed Council budget has seen money taken out of school budgets and parent councils are rightly concerned about the impact this will have.
Community facilities are also at risk with two community centres in Edinburgh Central among the six that the Council announced it planned to close as part of a cost saving enterprise. The Gorgie Memorial Hall and the Number Shop are both fighting the planned closures and I am keen to support them. The benefits that these closures would have on the Councl's balance sheet are completely dwarfed by the impact of the loss of these services for local communities.
I am also working closely with voluntary organisations who have had their futures placed at risk by reduced funding. Many voluntary organisations provide services for the most vulnerable in our communities and if they are allowed to go under I am greatly concerned about the impact this will have on these groups.
The best way to keep up to date on my work in the constituency is to sign up to my e-newsletter. There is a sign up form on the home page of this website.
